How the coverage works

Distance Is the Honest Answer

A lot of towing websites claim to cover half the state. Ours does not, because a company that claims everywhere is really telling you nothing about how long you will wait. We are a Portage operation with a small number of trucks, and the useful information is how far you are from them.

Portage itself — the 49002 and 49024 ZIP codes — is where the under-30-minute target applies. That covers the Westnedge and Shaver corridors, Romence Road, Milham, Oakland Drive, the Crossroads Mall area, the Lake Center neighborhoods and the residential streets between them. It also covers Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport, which despite its name sits inside Portage city limits.

From there we work out roughly 20 miles, which takes in most of Kalamazoo County: the city of Kalamazoo, Oshtemo, Comstock, Parchment, Vicksburg, Schoolcraft, Richland, Galesburg and Mattawan, plus Plainwell just over the county line. Response times in that band typically run 30 to 50 minutes depending on where the nearest truck is when you call.

Beyond that radius we still come, but we stop pretending it is quick. If somebody genuinely closer would get to you sooner, we will say so on the phone. Long-distance transport is a separate thing entirely — Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis and out of state — and that is booked and quoted rather than dispatched as an emergency.

The Corridors We Watch

Most emergency calls do not come from an address. They come from a shoulder, and the road you are on matters more than the town you are technically inside. The three highways below each have their own page, because a call on a freeway shoulder and one on a two-lane road are handled differently.

I-94

East to west past Portage, linking Detroit and Chicago. High speeds, heavy freight and narrow shoulders in places. Give us direction of travel and the nearest interchange. I-94 towing →

The main north-south routes through Portage itself. Retail traffic all day, which is why the 30-minute target flexes at rush hour.

The county roads

Unlit two-lane stretches out toward Vicksburg, Richland and Schoolcraft. Deep ditches, no shoulder to speak of, and where most of our winter recoveries happen.

Private property

Apartment decks, business lots, dealerships and gated communities. Access rules vary — tell us the gate code or who to speak to and we will save a trip.

Questions About Coverage

Does it cost more if I am further from Portage?

Yes, and it is the single biggest factor in what you pay. Towing is priced on distance because that is what actually consumes the truck’s time and fuel — both getting to you and taking the vehicle where it is going. A tow across Portage and the same tow starting in Richland are different jobs. You get the figure in US dollars before anything is dispatched, so there is no guessing involved.

Do you cover the airport?

Yes — Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport is physically inside Portage, so it falls squarely in our fastest zone. Long-stay parking lots are a common call for us: a car left for a week in January frequently will not start when its owner gets back. If you land and find a dead battery, we can usually be there before you have finished loading the trunk.

Will you cross into other counties?

We do regularly — Allegan, Van Buren, Barry and St. Joseph counties all sit within reach of the outer edge of our radius, and county lines mean nothing operationally. Mattawan, which we cover routinely, is in Van Buren County. What changes is the honesty of the ETA. Somewhere like Plainwell is routine; somewhere an hour out is a job we will quote but will also tell you plainly is not a fast response.

Are you the closest tow company to me?

In Portage, very likely. Out toward the county edges, quite possibly not — and if you are sitting somewhere cold with a real wait ahead of you, we would rather say so than book the job and let you find out. Call and describe where you are; the answer takes ten seconds and costs you nothing either way.

Can you reach a vehicle on a dirt or seasonal road?

Usually, though the surface changes which truck we bring. A loaded flatbed is heavy and does not like soft ground or deep spring mud, so on an unmaintained road we may winch the vehicle out to firm surface first and load it there. Describe the road when you call — gravel, two-track, snowed over — and we will plan for it rather than get a second vehicle stuck.

Do you serve the Western Michigan University area?

Yes, and student-area calls are a regular part of the week — lockouts, dead batteries after a long break, and cars parked somewhere they should not have been. Campus and adjacent housing lots often have their own towing arrangements and access rules, so if the vehicle is on university property, mention that on the phone so we can sort out access before rolling.

What about gated communities and private lots?

Not a problem, but access is the thing that wastes time. If there is a gate code, a call box or a manager who has to let us in, tell the dispatcher up front. For unauthorized vehicle removals from a lot you manage, we need authorization from the property owner or their representative before the vehicle moves — that is a legal requirement, not our policy.

Does bad weather change your coverage area?

It does not shrink the area, but it stretches every ETA in it. In a serious snow event demand across Kalamazoo County goes up several times over while road speeds drop, so a 25-minute Portage run can become an hour and a half. We keep working through it — those nights are exactly when people need us — but the number we give you will reflect the reality rather than the map.
